FSU The V oice Speaking For Ourselves Volume 37 No. 8 FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. June 30, 1983 fpr FSU holds 116th Commencement Dr. Janies L. Fisher, president of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) spoke to 349 graduates and their families at Fayetteville State’s 116th commence ment, held May 8th in the Cumberland County Arena. Dr. Fisher is a registered psychologist with a PH.D from Northwestern University. He is the author of three books, over 100 published articles and more than 500 newspaper articles, poems, features, and editorials. In addition, he is the recipient of five honorary doctorates and numerous awards for teaching, citizenship, writing, speaking, and leadership. Dr. Fisher called on every college and university in the country to “consider ways that they can join together with the public schools in order to most speedily Commencement (Photo By Mrs. Rosemary Byrd) affect our improved condition.” “We must not assume that this is someone else’s problem,” said Dr. Fisher. “National organizations should join in the task. We should bury old grievances, forge new compacts, develop designs, and establish specific and measurable goals.” He added that even though government assistance would be needed by educators, the government should not be expected to remedy the situation alone because the wait would result in lost time. “If the education community got to work right away,” he noted, “in less than a year, we could recommend modified curricula, establish remedial and evaluative programs, and make more certain the good future of our children and our nation.” In addition to Dr. Fisher’s address, Fayetteville State University’s Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs, J. V. Parham, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for his service as an accountant and financial advisor. FSU Presents First Family Of The Year Award Chancellor Charles “A” Lyons, Jr. presented the first annual Family of the Year Award to Mr. & Mrs. James R. Wright, Sr. of Rocky Mount, North Carolina during the Fayetteville Slate University Commencement Ceremony held recently. This award will be given annually to recognize and honor the parents of four (4) or more children who graduated from the University and who continue to bring honor to their familv ights Family Standing With Chancellor Charles “A.” Lyons (Photo By John Henderson) Dean Robinson Honored At Luncheon By Marion Crowe The Student Government Association (SGA), honored Dean (Ms.) Arnetha Robinson at a retirement luncheon in the Rudolph Jones Student Center Multipurpose Room on May 3, 1983. Jerry Beatty, president of the SGA was the presiding officer of the luncheon. After the luncheon, prepared by the members of the university canteen, Mr. Beatty spoke on the accomplishments of Dean Robinson and presented her with a clock and plaque from the Founders Day Observed By Jimmy Gibbs On Sunday, April 10, Fayetteville State University observed its one hundred and sixteenth Founders Day Program in the J. W. Seabrook Auditorium. student body in honor of her dedicated services to the university. Following the presentation. Dean Robinson advised those in attendance to continue to strive and move forward. “What you save now, will pay dividends in the end,” replied Ms. Robinson in her closing remarks. Dean Robinson is scheduled to retire in June, after twenty-seven years of outstanding and dedicated services to Fayetteville State University. and to the University through meaningful contributions in their respective communities. Mr. & Mrs. James R. Wright, Sr. are the parents of six children, four of whom graduated from FSU, one who attended for two years and one who is currently a senior at Rocky Mount Senior High School. Mr. Wright is employed at Planters National Bank and his wife, Mrs. Bessie R. Wright, is employed with Merita Bakery in Rocky Mount. Their children and the accomplish ments of each follow: Miss Phyllis Jean Wright, 72, received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Intermediate Education. She currently resides in Raleigh, NC and is employed as a Position Management Specialist at North Carolina Stale University. She was recently selected as one of the ten (10) Most Outstanding Young Women in America for her outstanding ability and accomplishments in her career and civic community involvement. Mr. Michael Jerome Wright, 74, received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. He currently resides in Richmond, VA and is a Supervisor with the E. I. Dupont, Inc. in the Tyvek Division. He is married and the father of a son. Mrs. Barbara Elaine Wright- McElwain, 76, received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. She currently resides in Oxon Hill, Maryland. She recently completed her studies for the Master of Art Degree from Trinity College in Washington, DC in Special Education, and, recently became the mother of a baby girl. She is presently involved in an intern program with the Association of Fund Raising Officers, Inc., at Howard University in the area of Development. Mr. James R. Wright, Jr., '82 received the Bachelor of Art Degree in English. He resides in Fayetteville, NC where he is presently employed with Hofheimer’s Department Store at the Cross Creek Valley Mall. Mrs. Theresa Wright Brownlee attended the University from 1979-81. She is the mother of a son and is presently working towards a degree in Nursing at the Edgecombe Technical Institute in Rocky Mount, NC. Miss Yvonne Denise Wright is a Senior at Rocky Mount Senior High School in Rocky Mount, NC. She has not decided on a University yet, but thinks she may also, attend Fayetteville State University. Is Military The Answer? Pg. 2 Ms. Jeanette Council, President, Fayetteville State University National Alumni Association delivered the address. Ms. Council addressed the past and present progresses of the university and concluded that Fayetteville Slate is one of the finest university’s in the southeast. The program ended with a silent salute and a pilgrimage to the monuments of the university’s founding fathers.
